Our Story
Malahide Swords Canoe Club (MSCC) is a junior kayaking club based on Broadmeadows Estuary in Malahide, Co. Dublin. Founded in 2020, we welcome children and young people from age 10 to 20 — whether they are completely new to paddling or looking to develop competitive skills.
Our core purpose is simple: to give kids the opportunity to learn and develop kayaking skills in a fun and safe environment, and to share the fantastic natural amenity that is Broadmeadows Estuary.
Our Home
We are based at Malahide Village Slipway, James Terrace, Malahide. Broadmeadows is a sheltered tidal estuary — an ideal location for learning to kayak, with calm upper waters for beginners and more varied conditions for experienced paddlers exploring further. The estuary is a nature reserve and an Area of Special Conservation. Paddling here means sharing the water with seabirds, seals, and some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in north Co. Dublin.
What We Offer
We run Saturday morning sessions from September to June, with pool sessions through the winter. Our fleet includes GP kayaks, slalom kayaks, K1, K2 and K4 racing kayaks, sea kayaks and play boats — one of the most varied fleets of any junior club in Dublin. All sessions follow the Canoeing Ireland skills award framework, from Intro level right through to Level 3 — which is the gateway to coaching qualifications. Most of our members achieve Level 2 during their time with the club; many go on to Level 3 and beyond.
Inclusion and accessibility
MSCC welcomes everyone — including people with physical disabilities and neurodivergent young people. We operate the V29, a specially adapted powerboat designed for water sports participation for people with disabilities. We run trips in partnership with local schools and organisations and actively promote inclusive access to the water.

William Irwin

Designated Liaison Person
William founded MSCC in 2020 and has coached hundreds of young paddlers on Broadmeadows Estuary. He holds a Canoeing Ireland coaching qualification and brings years of competitive and instructional experience to the club.
James O’Callaghan
Children’s Officer
James is the club’s designated Children’s Officer, responsible for safeguarding policy, Garda Vetting compliance and child protection practices across all club activities.
Susan Kenny
Safety Boat Driver & Committee Member
Susan holds a national powerboat licence and provides essential safety cover at sessions. She has been involved with the club since its early days.
Alan Farrell
Safety & Communications
Alan oversees the club’s safety cover on the water and manages the website and social media. He is working towards his powerboat qualification.
Conor Byrne
Honorary Secretary
Conor joined as a parent volunteer and quickly became one of the club’s core organisers. He manages communications, membership and the club’s growing documentation.
